What Is Sustainability?

The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability to meet the needs of the future.

Sustainability is a relatively new specialty and few people truly understand it, yet it is predicted to be the next global megatrend. When the word ‘sustainability’ is mentioned, most people think of environmental issues such as climate change or oil and gas drilling.Sustainability is far more than that. It involves social, economic, AND environmental issues. Without consideration and integration of all three and how they impact your life and business, sustainability is just a trendy cliche.Kairos Funding is an online crowdfunding platform with a focused purpose of connecting people with innovative sustainability ideas to people with financial resources to back those ideas. As a 100% sustainability crowdfunding platform, we understand the unique challenges individuals, entrepreneurs, and small businesses face when obtaining necessary funding to realize a sustainability idea.Sustainability has not been a predominant focus worldwide and for those passionate with a sustainability idea, opportunities to fund were few and far between.

A sustainable society is one that protects natural resources while ensuring social justice and economic well-being for all.

Sustainability Embodies 3 Pillars

PEOPLESocial Sustainability

Outside an organization, social sustainability encompasses such topics as: social equity, livability, health equity, community development, social capital, social support, human rights, labor rights, placemaking, social responsibility, social justice, cultural competence, community resilience, and human adaptation.

Inside an organization, social sustainability is the process or framework that promotes well-being among its own members while also supporting the ability of future generations to maintain a healthy community.

PROFITSEconomic Sustainability

Economic sustainability are the practices that support long-term economic growth without negatively impacting social, environmental, and cultural aspects of the community. When applied to economic growth, it is economic development that attempts to satisfy the needs of humans in a manner that also sustains natural resources and the environment for future generations.

Economic sustainability understands any economy functions within the ecosystem and cannot be separated from it.

PLANETEnvironmental Sustainability

Environmental sustainability is concerned with whether environmental resources will be protected and maintained for future generations. More specifically, it is the rate of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non-renewable resource depletion that can be continued indefinitely. If the rate cannot be continued indefinitely then it is not sustainable.
